How the work divides
Done for you. Done with you. Done by you.
From dependency, through partnership, to confidence.
Many traditional financial relationships begin — and often remain — with work being done for you. That suits a great many people, and there is nothing wrong with it. This is designed to help you progress.
Done for you
The specialists
Regulated, legal, tax and other technical work is carried out by appropriately authorised or qualified professionals, appointed by you under their own engagement.
Done with you
Where I sit
We organise the whole picture, explain the choices, coordinate the professionals around you, reach decisions and follow them through. Nothing is decided over your head.
Done by you
Where it leads
You increasingly understand the plan, stay in control and become less dependent on me — able to explain it yourself, judge what you are told and handle what comes next.
Done by you does not mean doing the technical work yourself. Regulated advice, legal drafting and tax work stay with the people qualified and authorised to do them. It means you understand what is happening, remain in control of it, and know which questions to ask.
The client experience
What working together looks like
Initial conversation
We explore what has prompted you to get in touch, and whether Sustain Momentum is likely to be of use. If it is not, I will say so.
Build the whole picture
Your finances, goals, family circumstances and existing professional relationships, brought together in one place.
Agree the priorities
The decisions, gaps and uncertainties that actually need attention, and the order they need it in.
Create and coordinate the plan
What needs doing, by whom and in what sequence — bringing in authorised or qualified professionals where the work requires them.
Build lasting confidence
Keeping the plan current, and building the understanding and structure that let you stay in control.
The scope of the work, how often we meet and the fee are all agreed with you before any client relationship begins. Nothing starts until you know exactly what you are agreeing to.
The point of it
What you should end up with
These are the intended outcomes of the work, not guarantees.
- A complete view of your financial position, in one place
- Priorities you have agreed, rather than a list someone handed you
- A clear understanding of who needs to do what
- Professional work that is better connected than it was
- Decisions that actually get followed through
- The confidence and understanding to remain in control
What people tell us they want
Built on evidence, not assumption
This comes from more than fifty years in financial services, and from asking people directly what they want from a financial planner. The same answers come back: knowing where they stand, confidence, peace of mind, and understanding that stays with them. Investment management is rarely the first thing anyone mentions.
Peace of mind matters more than people expect
Vanguard found 86% of advised clients reported greater peace of mind about their finances than when managing them alone, and that advised investors were about half as likely to report high financial stress.
Time is part of the value
In the same study, 76% said the relationship saved them time — a median of roughly two hours a week. Time, not performance, is often what people notice first.
The centre of gravity is shifting to planning
Cerulli Associates reports advisers expect 54% of investors to be receiving comprehensive, ongoing financial planning by 2027, up from 48%. The relationship, not the portfolio, is doing the work.
About these sources. Vanguard, The emotional and time value of advice (June 2025), from a survey of 12,443 investors. Cerulli Associates, 54% of investors will receive financial planning by 2027 (2026). Both report on United States investors, so we treat their findings as supporting evidence for a pattern we see in the UK, not as proof of it.
A note on availability
Deliberately small
Sustain Momentum is deliberately limited to a small number of client relationships, so that each person receives proper attention. Many people arrive through an introduction, but you do not need one. If the website has brought you here, that is reason enough to get in touch.
Arrange a Whole Picture Conversation
We will explore what is happening across your financial life, what feels disconnected, and whether Sustain Momentum could help you bring the whole picture together.
No charge, no preparation and no obligation to continue. You will speak directly with Patrick.
